Community Outreach - Wreaths Across America
Our community event Saturday December 15, 2012 is Wreaths Across America. We will join the wreath-laying event at Arlington National Cemetery.
The start time is 9:30AM at the Memorial Amphitheater near the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers for a welcome and briefing. Parking is very limited so please use the Metro.
This year the organization’s goal is to cover the entire cemetery, over 224,000 graves.
Clean-up of the wreaths will take place on Saturday, January 26, 2013. Details of clean-up will be posted as soon as I receive them.
Wreaths Across America is a nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992.
The mission- Remember, Honor, Teach- is carried out in part by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at a specified Saturday in December at Arlington, as well at veterans’ cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and beyond.
Live wreaths are used because Wreaths Across America feels strongly that they do not “decorate” graves. We are honoring all veterans and active military by placing wreaths on the headstones of veterans. The fresh evergreens are a symbol used for centuries to recognize honor, a living tribute renewed annually.
Register now to help Wreaths Across America hit their goal of 224,000 graves.
