Topic:  When to Accept, Inspect or Reject: Exploring the Payroll Professional’s Form W-4 Processing Obligations 

This presentation will focus on how to spot and resolve common Form W-4 red-flag processing issues, including: claimed “exemption” from federal income tax withholding, TIN mismatches, transition from pre- to post-TCJA W-4 reporting, undocumented worker identity verification, jurat modifications, employee challenges to lock-in letters, and former employee TIN collection and withholding considerations when processing lawsuit settlement payments.

With experience gained as a trial lawyer in the Tax Division of the US Department of Justice (DOJ), Steven P. Johnson advises clients on tax controversies and litigation matters involving complex tax issues. Before joining Morgan Lewis and working for the DOJ, Steven served as a law clerk to Judge Tucker L. Melancon of the US District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. He holds a Masters in Tax Law (LL.M.) from Georgetown Law School.
