Speaker:  D. Mark Wilson

About the Speaker:

Mark is the Principal at Applied Economic Strategies, LLC. He provides economic and public policy analyses, and strategic advisory services to business, government, and judicial decision-makers to enable them to clearly examine public policy choices and make fully informed decisions.

He has over 25 years of economic policy experience including serving seven years as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Employment Standards Administration at the U.S. Department of Labor for President Bush. There he oversaw and administered the Wage and Hour Division, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, and the Office of Labor-Management Standards.

Mark’s responsibilities at the Department of Labor included regulatory and legislative policy development and implementation; strategic planning for those policy initiatives; developing economic analyses for regulatory initiatives; providing general economic analysis; and developing print, broadcast, and internet media outreach plans.

His work included the first update to the overtime regulations in almost 50 years, the first update to the FMLA regulations, and the first reform of the union reporting regulations in over 40 years.

Prior to his work at the Department of Labor, Mark was a Research Fellow at The Heritage Foundation in Washington, D.C., where he specialized in workplace policy and tax issues. While at Heritage, Mark published over 50 research papers, testified 12 times before Congress and frequently briefed members of Congress and the Administration. He also briefed state and local legislators on a variety of federal workplace programs and issues.

Prior to coming to Heritage, Mark was a senior career economist in Office of the Assistant Secretary for Policy at the U.S. Department of Labor where he provided analysis to the Assistant Secretary, the Secretary of Labor, and the White House on a variety of labor market issues.

He has appeared on a number of national radio and television shows, including, CNN, CNBC, Fox News, and C-SPAN, to discuss a variety of labor policy issues. He has also published numerous articles and editorials in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Times, and many other major state newspapers.

Mark received a B.A. in economics from Kent State University in December 1979, and continued with Masters Degree studies in economics at George Washington University from 1983 to 1987.

He is a member of the American Economics Association, the National Association for Business Economics, and the National Economists Club.

Supply Drive -  We are continuing to support Martha's Table for this chapter meeting's supply drive. All items will be donated to Martha's Outfitters. At this meeting, we are requesting gently used clothes, no tears, stains or rips.  We request that these items are folded neatly and in either a box or shopping bag.  Please do not bring them in trash bags.

What is Martha's Table -  Martha's Table finds solutions to poverty in the short term with food and clothing programs and in the long term by breaking the cycle of poverty with education and family strengthening programs. Martha's Tables's mission is to help at-risk children and youth, families and individuals in our community to improve their lives by providing educational programs, food, clothing and enrichment opportunities.
